Focus Lab: Method Mash-Up Vol. 2

A hands-on lab for actors who want two clean tools they can use immediately—especially when a scene feels obvious, sticky, or hard to adjust.

In this Method Mash-Up, we’ll take one short scene and run it through two approaches:

SANFORD MEISNER: Repetition

We’ll train the core Meisner skill: getting out of your head and onto your partner. Using the repetition exercise, you’ll practice making a simple observation, repeating it back and forth, and letting it evolve only when something genuinely changes—so your work becomes reactive, alive, and specific, not “planned.”

KEITH JOHNSTONE: Status

We’ll layer in status—not “social class,” but the moment-to-moment dominance/submission signals that show up through posture, eye contact, pace, voice, interruption, and how much space you take. You’ll learn to raise/lower status cleanly and track status shifts so the relationship becomes instantly more playable and dynamic.
